Reading
We aim to promote in our pupils a life-long love of reading and books where every child sees themselves as a reader.
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. It plays an essential role in helping children's learning to be coherent and progressive. Our ambition is that by the time pupils leave our school in Year 6, they are enthusiastic, independent readers who take pleasure in reading across a range of genres. Staff are role models in terms of demonstrating a strong motivation to read for a variety of purposes. We immerse our children in both engaging and incrementally challenging fiction and non-fiction texts. We want our pupils to acquire a wide, rich vocabulary and build their comprehension skills.
Please see our English policy for further details.
The teaching of early reading, phonics and spelling is taught through the Ruth Miskin Read, Write, Inc programme. Please see the Ruth Miskin website for more information:
We also subscribe to Oxford Owl, an online resource which gives our pupils access to hundreds of additional reading material including; a free eBook library, decodable phonics books set for home learning, English and maths activities and support for parents and carers. Please see the website for more details:

To help ensure our pupils are accessing high quality texts, we refer to Pie Corbett's Reading Spine (links to these are at the bottom of this page). This is a helpful reference tool for parents and carers as well if you're after guidance on recommended children's texts.
We aim to promote a culture of reading at our school by providing reading-rich environments in each classroom with a designated reading / book corner. We have a well-stocked library where each child is given the opportunity to lend a book.
Reading at home is very important, whether this be independently, to an adult or sharing a story with an adult or sibling. Parents and carers are actively encouraged to hear their child read. All children have a reading record they record their home reading in.
In EYFS and KS1, pupils are sent home decodable phonics books that are in line with the phonics being taught in school. The children are sent home with two books weekly, a RWI phonics book they have read in school as part of their phonics lessons and another book, a 'Book Bag Book' which links directly to the sounds taught that particular week. Additionally, children are invited to borrow a book from our school library, a book 'to love and enjoy' at home.
