What is a Rights Respecting School?

The Rights Respecting School initiative is a nationwide award scheme that promotes the ‘United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child’ (UNCRC) This Convention forms the basis of all the work untaken by UNICEF and reminds the world that all children have the right to be:safe,educated,healthy, fairly treated, enjoy their childhood and be heard.

At St Nicholas we have all been learning about these rights and the responsibilities that accompany them. We have recognised their importance by putting them at the heart of all we do and incorporating them into our vision and core aims for the school.

Vision Statement:

‘At St Nicholas we nurture everyone to be the best we can be, in a caring and inclusive Christian environment.’

UNCRC Article 29: All children have the right to learning that allows you to become the best that you can be.’

Ethos Statement

At St Nicholas we recognise the historic foundation of our school and work in partnership with the Church to provide high quality education within the context of Christian beliefs and practice. We encourage an understanding of the meaning and significance of the teachings of Christ, alongside promoting tolerance and respect for other cultures and faiths, and those expressing no faith. The Christian values of Love, Hope and Trust are at the centre of all the experiences we provide and permeate all we do.

A flavour of what we have we done so far….

  • The children elected Rights Respecting Ambassadors who have led assemblies for parents and reported to governors; they have also visited other schools and informed the wider community about our work, through writing articles in the parish magazine.
  • Our School Council and ECO committee have also helped to lead the initiative.
  • Our Harvest Assembly celebration was based around the Rights of the Child and involved the whole school. We also held a musical Fairtrade Café to raise money for farmers in developing countries.
  • Home / school projects have included designing posters and making some fabulous games!
  • We invited a representative from UNICEF into school to talk to parents and children about the work of UNICEF and the importance of ‘UNCRC
  • We have raised money for charities and formed links with a school in Pakistan
  • We discuss local, national and world issues with the children and link these to the rights of others.
  • We ‘ve developed class charters around rights and responsibilities
  • Assembly and curriculum themes reinforce the key Christian values and encourage children to reflect and look beyond their own world.
  • We have family groups and buddy systems that help the children to feel secure and confident.

As a result of this …

  • Our whole community has a better understanding of the work of UNCRC
  • The ethos is inclusive and caring and often commented on by visitors!
  • Children are developing greater resilience and an ability to reflect
  • Relationships are very strong between all sections of the community.
  • We understand that we have a responsibility towards others and how our actions can make a difference.
  • There is a common language and shared vision with everyone contributing and aiming ‘..to be the best we can be…’

We’ve Passed.

September 11th, 2013

Last week we received confirmation that we have been awarded Level 1 of the Rights Respecting School Awards. We were inspected by two representatives from UNICEF who were extremely impressed by the children’s knowledge and understanding of the UNCRC (United Nations Children’s Rights Convention) Learning about their own and others rights has led to the principles and values of the CRC being highlighted within our curriculum and embedded in our ethos. This is reflected in our new ‘School Charter’ which resulted from consultation with all the children and the work of our School Council and RRS ambassadors.
